The 2020 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Isaac Okoro 2020 NBA Draft Profile.
Background
Position: Guard/Forward
Size: 6-foot-6, 225 pounds
School: Auburn
Class: Freshman
Okoro was a solid freshman, but no one expected him to be in the running to be a lottery pick. After being a four-star recruit, Okoro joined Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers and helped show off his talents well.
In his first few games, it was apparent that Okoro would play a huge role for Auburn. He played 31.5 minutes per game for the Tigers. Okoro averaged 12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. His best game came against Vanderbilt, when he had 23 points and six rebounds. His play helped Auburn go 25-6, as they were looking forward to receiving a good seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament before it was canceled.
He wasn’t the biggest scorer for the Tigers, but Okoro displayed his abilities enough to be a solid draft prospect. Okoro should expect to be drafted in the lottery of the 2020 NBA Draft.
Strengths
Okoro has an NBA-ready body. He stands at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, which is good for a wing player in the NBA. A lot of draft prospects will need to add on weight and strength, but that won’t be an issue with Okoro. Because he is physically ready for the grind of the NBA schedule he should be able to work more on other areas of his game early in his career.
He is a solid athlete, which should also help him adjust to the NBA game. His solid speed and jumping ability help show his athleticism. Okoro is able to get to the basket and is tough to stop in transition. On the defensive side of the ball, Okoro uses his athleticism well to stay in front of his man and also to make plays. It also helps him rebound better than most players at his position.
His defense is what will help keep him on the floor in the NBA. He can guard well on the perimeter and usually is able to stay with his man. Okoro has the size and length to be disruptive to smaller players, but also to be able to guard bigger players in the post. He takes chargers, rotates well and does everything necessary on the defensive side of the ball to help his team win.
Weaknesses
His shooting needs to be improved to be left on the court in crunch time. He shot just 28.6 percent from deep at Auburn and 67.4 percent from the free-throw line. Okoro doesn’t have the best form so it will be hard for him to improve his shooting percentage. Right now his offensive game is limited to driving to the basket.
He is also an inconsistent player. Okoro had good games where he’d produce, but also had others when he would not show up much. Against Kentucky he scored nine points and there were seven other games when he couldn’t get to double-digits. A lot of these contests were against good teams, which is not a good sign for when he makes the jump to the next level.
There are some serious questions about whether Okoro is worth taking early in the draft because he is more of a role player than a star. He helps his team out and plays well, but he doesn’t score a lot and doesn’t set make huge impact plays. This is a weak draft class, so him being a good role player with some developmental traits could help him be selected early.
Projected Draft Range: Lottery Pick
