Dwight Howard Set to Join Lakers

After an unfortunate injury to their recently signed center DeMarcus Cousins, the Lakers have found another big man.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Dwight Howard is set to sign with the Lakers.

Howard and his representatives reached a buyout agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies, the team that acquired him in July.  The Grizzlies acquired Howard in a deal with the Washington Wizards. They gave up CJ Miles to get Howard.

Howard joins the Lakers after meeting and working out for the organization. The Lakers looked at other options such as Joakim Noah and Marreese Speights and held workouts with them. They were also considering Marcin Gortat, who last played for the Los Angeles Clippers. However, they chose Howard, a center who once played for the Lakers.

Wojnarowski also said that Howard’s deal with the Lakers is non-guaranteed. The Lakers want to give him a chance to show the progress he has made in conducting himself. If Howard fails to show improvement, the Lakers can cut him without cost. So, the move benefits the Lakers.

This will be Howard’s second stint with the Lakers. Howard played for the Orlando Magic before they traded him to the Lakers. He played one season with the Lakers before signing with the Houston Rockets in 2013. Since then, he has been with the Atlanta Hawks, the Charlotte Hornets, the Brooklyn Nets, the Wizards and the Grizzlies. But, he did not suit up for the Nets or Grizzlies.

With a possible season-ending injury to Cousins, the Lakers needed to make a move. Howard’s first stint with the Lakers did not go well, but he can change things around. If he can be a rim protector and rebounder, the move will help the Lakers throughout the season.
