The Grizzlies have given out the first $200-plus contract in the history of their franchise in Memphis. It goes to Desmond Bane, who was given a five-year, $207 million deal as NBA free agency kicked into high gear on Saturday.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news via Twitter.
The shooting guard played in just 58 games last season, collecting 21.5 points, five rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. In (just under) a full season in 2021-2022, he scored 18.2 points per game. He was originally chosen with the last pick of the first round by the Boston Celtics in 2020, but was dealt away on draft night.
In the free agency sweepstakes, the Grizzlies have also signed former MVP, Derrick Rose. Bane will now return to the court with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson, Jr., the newly-acquired Marcus Smart and will have to wait 25 games to play with Ja Morant again.
