Could Carmelo Anthony Help the Nets?

With the NBA preseason later this month, there are a few notable free agents. One of them is a player that has been in free agency since last season, and his name always comes up in rumors. That player is Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony’s name has been attached to numerous teams. However, every time the rumors surface, nothing comes out of them. Now, another team is in the mix.

Recently, Anthony is attached to a new team: the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are tied to Anthony, as a few events influence the move.

Wilson Chandler receives a 25-game suspension

They lost one of their forwards in Wilson Chandler, as he received a 25-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension comes more than a month after Chandler signed a one-year, vet minimum deal. While Chandler will return after his suspension, the Nets are down a player. This is where Anthony steps in.

Irving and Durant push for Anthony

Another event that may influence a deal between Anthony and the Nets is the input of the Nets’ star players. Recently, there were reports that Nets Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were in favor of the Nets signing Anthony. He heard the rumors and responded by calling the two players “family.”

“That’s family, so that’s bigger than basketball,” Anthony said. “If something happens, something’s gonna happen. Everybody will know if something happens.”

While no deal is in place, the Nets may give Anthony the opportunity he wants. He has another chance at joining a contender as well as a potential “farewell tour” like his 2003 draftmate Dwyane Wade did last season. So, a deal with the Nets works in Anthony’s favor.

The Nets have two stars, but one of them will miss the 2019-20 season. Durant suffered an Achilles injury during the 2019 NBA Finals and will miss the 2019-20 season. So, the Nets could use some offense to somewhat fill the void. If the Nets fail to land Big 3 MVP Joe Johnson, Anthony could be an option. He gives the Nets offense as well as another veteran. If he accepts his role, Anthony could be a big help to the Nets, who hope to become one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams.

The Nets had an excellent offseason, as they picked up Durant and Irving, as well as a big man in DeAndre Jordan. As a team that made the playoffs last season, the Nets are in a great position and have what it takes to contend. Anthony might be the icing on the cake.
