The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Draft profile for 2023.
Cleveland finished the regular season with a record of 51-31, which garnered them the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. In somewhat of a surprise, they were ousted from the first round of the playoffs in five games by the Knicks. This was their first season as a playoff team since LeBron James left for the Lakers.
The Cavaliers have one picks in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Second Round (one pick):
Pick #49: Jalen Wilson, F, Kansas
2023 might prove to be a very deep wing draft when it’s all said and done, because there are multiple options the Cavs could target even with a pick this low. Jalen Wilson seems like a good fit, and will likely be there for them at 49.
Wilson needs to become a better shooter, that much is apparent. He also needs to learn to use his large frame to become a better interior defender and scorer. But there’s a lot to like here from a potential standpoint.
He averaged 8.3 rebounds last year, speaking to using his size to box out defenders. There’s a comfortability with the ball in his hands that teams don’t usually see with a wing player this young, and he’ll play through contact. The main polishing here needs to be done on his offensive game, but there’s potential in Wilson to become a great second-unit forward.
