The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Brooklyn Nets NBA Draft profile for 2023.
The Nets started their season by firing head coach Steve Nash in favor of Jacque Vaughn on November 1. They managed to still make the playoffs despite trading away their two star players, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Philadelphia dispatched the new-look Nets in a sweep during the first round, however.
The Nets have three picks in the 2023 NBA Draft.
First Round (two picks):
Second Round (one pick):
Pick #21: Nick Smith, Jr., G, Arkansas
Smith is a two-way two guard that has a very high offensive ceiling, even if it’s not immediately present in his tape. He can score at every level, including getting up very quick and fluid shots around the rim. Even though he can take bad shots, that doesn’t mean he can’t iron that out at the next level.
His defense is a big selling point, and he plays hard on and off the ball. There’s little in terms of raw athleticism to speak of, but that’s not always an issue with someone who wants to play a true shooting guard role.
Pick #22: Jett Howard, F, Michigan
The son of the Fab 5’s Juwan Howard, Jett has proven that he, too, has an NBA pedigree. It goes without saying that he grew up around the game. Howard likely knows what it takes to be professional and to work as a cog in an NBA machine.
Defensively, he’s going to struggle right away. There’s no real getting around that aspect of his game. Offensively, however, he’s a fun and athletic scorer that was trusted to shoot a bunch of three-pointers at Michigan. On 7.3 three point attempts per game, he scored at an almost 37 percent clip.
Pick #51: Oscar Tshiebwe, C, Kentucky
Why not take a flyer on a true center in a bad center draft?
Tshiebwe is obviously a prolific NCAA rebounder. One of the best to ever do it, in fact. But his offensive game is limited. He was trusted to take more jump shots last year, but he likely won’t try things like that right away at the next level.
His defensive potential is apparent at 7-foot-3, and he’ll look to block shots and be intimidating around the rim. There needs to be some quick growth if he wants to stay in the league, but he could pay the bills by getting the Nets extra possessions.
