The Boston Celtics have agreed to a blockbuster trade that will send Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.
Trade discussions surrounding Brown intensified over the last few weeks, with several teams inquiring about the star player, including the Milwaukee Bucks, who explored a potential Brown-for-Antetokounmpo trade before Antetokounmpo was dealt to Miami.
This is the latest shocking move in a wild free agency period, with Ja Morant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LaMelo Ball, Walker Kessler and Julius Randle all being traded over the last week.
Brown, 29, is coming off a career-best season in which he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while earning All-NBA Second Team honors.
Brown played a huge role in the Celtics’ rise as one of the NBA’s premier teams over the last decade. He is a five-time All-Star and helped lead Boston to two NBA Finals appearances, including an NBA championship in 2024 when he was named Finals MVP.
Since entering the league, Brown has formed one of the NBA’s best duos alongside Jayson Tatum and has appeared in 142 playoff games, the most of any player in the league since being drafted.
Brown will now head to an Eastern Conference rival after the 76ers eliminated the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs this past season. He’ll join Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe in the backcourt while teaming up with former MVP Joel Embiid to form one of the NBA’s newest star cores.
The Celtics will receive a 36-year-old Paul George entering his 17th season. Despite dealing with injuries in recent years, George averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season in 37 games while shooting 43.9% from the field and an impressive 39.2% from three-point range.
Along with George, the Celtics also add valuable future first- and second-round draft picks.
