Boston Celtics 2023 NBA Draft Profile

Publish Date: June 14, 2023

The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Boston Celtics NBA Draft profile for 2023.

Summary

Boston made Joe Mazzulla their head coach in the interim after a scandal that ousted Ime Udoka. He became the team’s full-time head coach in February. They earned the second seed in the East after a 57-25 season, making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite forcing a Game 7 after falling into an 0-3 hole, the Celtics fell short of a repeat NBA Finals appearance.

2023 Draft Picks

The Celtics have one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Second Round (one pick):

  • Pick #35

Team Needs

  • Decisions on Brown/Tatum
  • Shot creation (either off-ball or through playmaking)

Projected Targets

Pick #35: Marcus Sasser, G, Houston

This late in the draft, there aren’t a lot of guards that really fit the Celtics’ needs here. The closest is probably Sasser, who is a scoring threat on two levels and can defend the three-point line at the NBA level right now.

He may replace another Marcus on the Celtics roster (Marcus Smart) with his style of play. He can create his own shot and pull up while playing as a true point guard, but can also be consistent in catch-and shoot situations.

The problem is, he needs to grow as a passer. Sasser’s passing isn’t abysmal by any means, but he needs to play as a true, playmaking one guard to make a true difference for this Celtics team. That may impede his shooting in the early years of his career, but it will pay dividends for the squad in the long run.
