The 2025 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Asa Newell NBA Draft Profile.
Position: Forward
Size: 6-foot-9, 223.8 pounds
Class: Freshman
College/Country: UConn
2024-2025 stats: 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 1.0 steals, 1.0 blocks, 54.3% FG, 29.2% 3FG, 74.8% FT
Newell was a five-star recruit in the class of 2024 who signed with Georgia out of Florida. He was an impact player as a freshman with averages of 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. His play helped Georgia make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.
Following the 2025 NCAA Tournament, Newell declared for the NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
For a bigger player, Newell has good strength and body control. He has the ability to get by bigger defenders and create an athletic mismatch. Newell has good quickness and speed for his size. He has good leaping ability, which helps him finish and help protect the rim a little bit on defense.
Newell has a good post game and can finish at the rim. He is able to finish with dunks in the halfcourt or in transition. Newell uses his body to shield himself from shot blockers when going up for layups at the basket. He has some post moves as well and should provide an NBA team with solid interior scoring.
He has a good motor, which helps a team in a few different ways. Newell is always fighting for rebounds, even when he is outmatched on the inside. He plays defense hard and can help a team with picking up some steals or with blocks while providing some help-side defense. Newell runs the floor well
Newell has the potential to develop as an outside shooter, but he isn’t quite there yet. He shot under 30 percent from deep at Georgia. Right now, Newell can space the floor a little bit, but with more work he can help space the floor out better.
At 6-foot-9 and 223.8 pounds, Newell can be mismatched in the post against bigger players. He needs to add play strength to fill out his body and match up better. This will also help him play through contact better when at the rim. On defense, he should be more of a presence with more strength.
His post-defense also leaves some to be desired. He is better as a help defender than he is in one on one defense in the post. Newell can get backed down and give up too much scoring in the post. If he can’t guard smaller players, he’ll have to work on his defense in the post to be an effective player.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick
