Are the Los Angeles Lakers a Potential Destination for Andre Drummond?

Publish Date: March 16, 2021

Andre Drummond, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ center, has not appeared in an NBA game since mid-February. The Cavaliers took him out of the rotation because they are looking for a trade for Drummond before the March 25 deadline. As of now there are no other teams that can offer the Cavs enough to get them to trade Drummond. The New York Knicks have showed interest in the center but there has been no deal yet.

With March 25 fast approaching, the Cavs may buy out Drummond. A buy out in the NBA is when a team and a player mutually agree to part ways. Then the player and team agrees to pay a certain amount of the player’s salary. Once the team pays the player, the player cannot re-sign or be claimed off of waivers by that team for one year or until the contract is expired. This means that the Cavs would  have to pay part of Drummond’s salary if the team and him decide to part ways.

After a buy out, the player essentially becomes a free agent. For Drummond, both the Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets seem to be interested in acquiring him. The Lakers would need to give up a lot of assets to actually acquire Drummond. The Cavs seem pretty adamant about finding a trade for Drummond before the deadline. The possibility of Drummond to the Lakers could bring some experience to the team.

Drummond spent eight seasons of his career with the Detroit Pistons and got traded to the Cavs during the season last year. This year, Drummond only played 25 games but still averaged 13.5 rebounds per game and 17.5 points per game. For his career stats, Drummond is averaging 14.6 points per game and 13.8 rebounds per game. Even though he is a 10 year veteran, it does not seem like Drummond is slowing down anytime soon. This means that Drummond could bring experience, scoring, and rebounding to the Lakers if the buy out happens.

The Cavs seem to be hoping for a deal before March 25 for Drummond. Since the deadline is approaching, the possibility of a buyout is becoming more likely. In that case, the Lakers seem to be one of the top candidates for Drummond. Drummond could make an impact on the team if he were to come onto the squad.
