After being one of the best recruits in the country, Edwards chose to go to Georgia. When he was there he was able to prove that he was one of the best recruits in the 2020 NBA Draft class.

In his one season at Georgia, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 2.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game. His best game was in the Maui Invitational when he caught fire and scored 37 points against Michigan State. He was able to lead Georgia to a 16-16 record. Edwards showed the ability to score the basketball well for the Bulldogs.

His one year at Georgia allowed Edwards to prove he was a very gifted player. He could be the first overall pick if things go his way before the NBA Draft.

Anthony Edwards

Strengths

His athleticism is his greatest strength. Edwards has an NBA-ready body at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds that he uses to his advantage. It isn’t a stretch to say that Edwards is one of the best athletes in the class, as he can run, jump and do just about anything in between. If he busts in the NBA it definitely won’t be because of his athleticism.

Edwards is able to finish at the rim very well. He has good acceleration to get by his man and then can finish with either hand at the rim. His ability to finish through contact is elite. His athleticism and size allows him to finish with layups or dunks, making him a good scorer when he gets a head of steam going toward the basket.

He has demonstrated good enough ball-handling and command of an offense to play either guard spot in the NBA. His ability to pass well and find an open man will allow him to run an offense when called upon. Edwards can also run around screens and get open, demonstrating the ability to play off the ball too.

Weaknesses

While he can shoot from deep at a decent level, he settles for too many deep threes instead of getting to the basket. He shot 29.4 percent from deep last season with Georgia, but would often throw up more threes than necessary. If he focuses on getting to the basket more often, he will be a much better player.

Edwards turns over the ball too much and needs to play less recklessly. He turned over the ball 2.7 times per game at Georgia and he wasn’t the primary ball-handler. If he wants to truly be a combo guard, he has the skills, but he needs to clean up this area of his game before an NBA coach can fully trust him.

His defensive awareness can also improve if he wants to be a better overall player. He can lose sight of the ball too much and focuses too much on his man. This doesn’t allow him to play great team defense, so while he can guard his man, the team can suffer if he is on the floor. A better understanding of what offenses are trying to do will also help.
