The NBA free agency just started and players are already starting to move. With the shortened offseason and shortened free agency, teams are eager to start negotiations. The Los Angeles Lakers have shown some interest in different players but they also have their current roster to worry about.
Anthony Davis is coming off a monster playoff series and NBA Championship going into free agency. Davis opted out of his player option and became a free agent on Friday. Considering the historic playoff run that the Lakers just had, most people are expecting Davis to re-sign with the Lakers. Since it seems that he will be re-signing with the Lakers, the expectation is that Davis just wants to get the maximum amount of money in his new contract. The Lakers will present Davis with a number of deals that they hope will get Davis to re-sign.
KCP also just helped the Lakers bring home their first championship since 2010 and is now opting out of his player option and becoming an unrestricted free agent. While KCP is not set on returning to the Lakers, the team still could bring him back. Since KCP was on the team last year, the Lakers could re-sign him and exceed their salary cap limit because of the “Bird” rights. There may be other teams interested in KCP so re-signing with the Lakers is not a given for him.
These two players really stepped up in the Lakers championship run this year and free agency may shift the team. Despite the contract negotiations, there should be some trust in the Lakers front office to make the right decisions this offseason. Already the Lakers acquired Dennis Schroder from the Oklahoma City Thunder. There should be a lot of activity during the offseason and it is already off to a busy start.
