After a successful launch, MultiVersus becomes the fighting game with the most concurrent players on Steam. The platform crossover fighter features characters from Warner Bros. intellectual properties. Characters from DC, Cartoon Network, HBO, and more are playable.
Successful Launch
After its public launch on Jul. 26, MultiVersus has reached over 100,000 active players on Steam. A player count rose to a peak of 153,044 players on steam alone. According to official steam charts, it sits with some of the most concurrent players on steam.
This also doesn’t account for the player base on consoles. Playstation nor Players First Games and Warner Bros. release the player count on consoles. The game features crossplay and rollback netcode, allowing PC and console players to enjoy the game together.
Thankfully due to the successful launch and crossplay there is no shortage of players to compete with.
The success brings up the conversation in the fighting game community about whether more fighting games should try using the free-to-play model. Most fighting games release with a set roster that is available from the start, while MultiVersus features locked characters and rotation of free-to-play characters.
The game monetizes itself with customization options such as skins, banners, knockout animations, and a battle pass. The battle consists of exclusive unlockable rewards besides what is purchasable on the in-game store via microtransactions.
Will Free-To-Play be the Future of Fighting Games?
MutliVersus is currently the second other free-to-play fighting game, alongside Brawlhalla, another platform fighting game. The easy access, and being multiplatform is a reason anyone would be willing to try the game out.
The only major publisher planning on releasing a fighting game that’ll likely be free-to-play is Riot Games. After acquiring Radiant Entertainment, the founders Tom Cannon and Tony Cannon will lead Project L.
It’s too early to decide whether MultiVersus will have a long-lasting appeal or whether Free-To-Play is the most successful model.
However, as most fighting games go, the player base will decrease over time but will continue with a dedicated fanbase. First reactions are very positive on steam and the player base is actively playing, and learning the game.
MultiVersus may not have the same reach as Super Smash Bros. Despite being exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the most successful fighting game of all time. According to official reports from Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 28.17 million copies.
The other major platform fighter Brawlhalla is another free-to-play platform fighter with crossplay. Brawlhalla still sees a healthy dedicated fanbase, thanks to its crossplay with every platform. MultiVersus will likely see even more success and maintain a healthy fanbase throughout its lifespan. MutliVersus is available on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch.
The game is designed to be both casual fans and aims to have a competitive scene. The first major tournament will be at EVO 2022. The tournament will have a prize pool of $100,000 so the scene is already starting strong with a high payout.
Most fighting games in the market are made in Japan and are usually $60 on release. However, with MultiVersus and Project L, we may see even more western fighting games with a free-to-play model.
