The Chicago White Sox have finalized a deal with James McCann worth $2.5 million. The White Sox will likely use McCann as a backup option to Welington Castillo. McCann is replacing former catcher Omar Narvaez who was traded for potential closer Alex Colome.
The Chicago White Sox Finalize Deal With James McCann
Last season McCann produced a slash line of .220/.267/.314 with eight homers and 39 RBIs. The year 2018 is McCann’s worst season to date. He had career lows in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and RBIs. While having a career high in strikeouts. He also produced a WAR of -0.5 which is also a career low.
McCann’s career numbers are 40 homers, 177 RBIs and a slash line of .240/.288/.366. Although his hitting numbers are quite low last season he threw out 36% of would-be base stealers. He has always had a strong caught stealing percentage with a career total of 37%, but he has had 2 seasons of +40%.
He was originally drafted out of high school by the White Sox in the 31st round in 2008. However, he decided to attend the University of Arkansas instead. He was then drafted by the Tigers in the second round of 2011. He made his debut in 2014 with Detroit and remained there until November 30 when the Tigers failed to offer him a deal by the deadline.on
McCann should serve as a decent backup option, while Seby Zavala adjusts to the major league level. The White Sox will also be looking at prospect Zack Collins, as he is almost ready for a call-up as well.
Since the White Sox only signed McCann for one-year, it is unlikely that McCann will be around long term. The Sox will be looking forward to seeing their many top prospects make a splash in the majors. This deal is a low-risk option for the Sox as they have the potential to compete this year if they sign a couple more free agent names, or a maybe one big name.
