The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Washington Nationals.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
The Washington Nationals finished with a record of 55-107 in 2022. That record was not only the worst in the NL East, but also secured them dead last in the entire National League. They were the very first team eliminated from the postseason, on September 6.
1. Patrick Corbin
2022 stats: 6-19, 6.31 ERA, 152.2 IP, 107 ER
Corbin had a pretty abysmal season in 2022. He led the league in losses (19), hits (210), earned runs (107). His 6.31 ERA was also the worst of his career.
2. Josiah Gray
2022 stats: 7-10, 5.02 ERA, 148.2 IP, 83 ER
Gray entered his second season in 2022, after already playing for two teams in his rookie year. His first full season in Washington D.C. saw him lead the entire MLB in home runs (38) surrendered and the American league in walks (66).
3. MacKenzie Gore
2022 stats: 4-4, 4.50 ERA, 70.0 IP, 35 ER
Gore got a surprising amount of work during his rookie year as a Padre. In 70 innings pitched, he gave up 66 hits and 35 earned runs for an ERA of 4.50. He started 13 games, appearing in three more.
4. Trevor Williams
2022 stats: 3-5, 3.21 ERA, 89.2 IP, 32 ER
Williams pitched the third-fewest innings of his seven-year career in 2022. He struck out 84 batters in 30 appearances (nine starts). He’ll likely get starter’s innings in 2023.
5. Chad Kuhl
2022 stats: 6-11, 5.72, 137.0 IP, 87 ER
Chad Kuhl did pitch a shutout last season, but had a down year overall. He had the highest ERA (5.72) and surrendered the most earned runs (87) and home runs of his career.
