Is Shohei Ohtani (the hitter) surpassing the fantasy value of Shohei Ohtani (the pitcher)? Image Courtesy of USA Today FTW.
Ohtani was diagnosed yesterday with new damage to the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. Doctors recommended Tommy John Surgery. Tommy John is a name players and fans alike do not like to hear because it usually means a player is going to be out for at least a year.
The diagnosis did not stop Ohtani as he played in the game against the Texas Rangers later that night. Ohtani homered twice as he went 4-4 and helped fuel the Angels to a 9-3 win. The Angels have not handled the injury of their superstar well this season and because of this probably will not pitch again till 2020.
Shohei Ohtani, also known as the Japanese Babe Ruth for being a two-way player, has been putting on a show this season for the Las Angeles Angels. In 247 at-bats this season, the Japanese phenom is hitting .287, with 18 home runs and 47 RBI’s. At the same time, in 51.2 innings pitched, the 24-year-old is 4-2 with a 3.31 era and 63 strikeouts. Ohtani has spent small stints on the DL this season, which will cost him any chance he had at winning rookie of the year.
