The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Texas Rangers.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
With a record of 68-94, the Texas Rangers finished fourth in their division and were 18 games behind the final Wild Card spot. This was their sixth consecutive year missing the postseason. In August, they fired their manager Chris Woodward and are going into 2023 with the three-time World Series-winning manager Bruce Bochy.
1. Jacob deGrom
2022 stats: 5-4, 3.08 ERA, 64.1 IP, 22 ER
deGrom starts his first season in Texas after a down year. He pitched only 64.1 innings, but still posted a good ERA. The two-time Cy Young winner, four-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year has placed top 10 in Cy Young voting six times.
2. Nathan Eovaldi
2022 stats: 6-3, 3.87 ERA, 109.1 IP, 47 ER
Eovaldi followed up a 2021 campaign in which he became an All-Star, top-5 Cy Young finisher and top-15 MVP candidate with an underwhelming season. He did pitch a complete game shutout in 2022, however.
3. Martin Perez
2022 stats: 12-8, 2.89 ERA, 196.1 IP, 63 ER
2022 was Perez’s first season as a Ranger since 2018. He re-joined the team with a 2.89 ERA in almost 200 innings. He also pitched a complete game shutout and was an All-Star last season.
4. Jon Gray
2022 stats:
Gray also spent his first season in Dallas last year. He went 7-7 in 24 starts, and pitched over 100 innings for the sixth time in his eight-year career. His ERA was the third-best of his career.
5. Andrew Heaney
2022 stats: 4-4, 3.10 ERA, 72.2 IP, 25 ER
Heaney’s only season as a Dodger came with the best ERA of his entire career. He started 14 games, appearing in two more. Despite the workload, Heaney only recorded eight decisions.
