The 2023 MLB trade deadline is coming to a close at 6:00pm ET, and the Rangers have snuck a deal in under the wire. Texas has traded for backup catcher Austin Hedges. Coming back in the deal is international pool money.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
Hedges began his MLB career back in 2015, with the San Diego Padres. He spent five years and change there before joining the Cleveland Guardians for a two-plus. He is currently on a one-year, $5 million contract.
In 2023, Hedges is hitting just .180 on on 187 plate appearances/161 official at-bats. He’s hit one home run, had 14 runs batted in and 11 base on balls. Interestingly, he also leads the entire MLB in sacrifice bunts as of August 1.
