The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the St. Louis Cardinals.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
Cardinals 2022 Season Review
The Cardinals returned to the top of the NL Central in 2022, earning a record of 93-69. It was St. Louis’ first season under new manager Oliver Marmol. They didn’t make it out of the Wild Card Series, losing to the eventual World Series NL representative, Philadelphia Phillies.
2023 Projected Pitching Rotation
1. Adam Wainwright
2022 stats: 11-12, 3.71 ERA, 191.2 IP, 79 ER
In 2023, Adam Wainwright will be entering his 19th MLB season at age 41. Despite his age, he’ll likely be the Opening Day starter yet again. He pitched his 11th complete game last season.
2. Miles Mikolas
2022 stats: 12-13, 3.29 ERA, 202.1 IP, 74 ER
Mikolas pitched over 200 innings for the second time in his career in 2022, posting his second-best ERA when getting starters’ work. He was rewarded with an All-Star nod for his efforts last year.
3. Jordan Montgomery
2022 stats: 9-6, 3.48 ERA, 178.1 IP, 69 ER
Montgomery joined the Cardinals midseason, starting 11 games during his time in St. Louis. He had a complete game shutout last year, helping lead to a 3.11 ERA in a Cardinals uniform.
4. Jack Flaherty
2022 stats: 2-1, 4.25 ERA, 36.0 IP, 17 ER
Flaherty hasn’t gotten starter’s work since 2019, when he pitched just under 200 innings. A shoulder cost him Spring Training and the beginning of the season in 2022. Despite that, he signed another one-year deal for 2023.
5. Steven Matz
2022 stats: 5-3, 5.25 ERA, 48.0 IP, 28 ER
2022 was Matz’s first year in St. Louis after six season as a Met and one more as a Blue Jay in 2021. He pitched the third-fewest innings of his eight-year career last season. In 15 appearances (10 starts), he managed to win five games.
