The San Francisco Giants are dealing left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcher Miguel Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Mendez and Hernandez are the Padres’ fourth- and ninth-ranked prospects, respectively.
Ray, a seasoned veteran in his 14th MLB season, has played for the Tigers, D-backs, Blue Jays, Mariners and Giants, and will now be heading to San Diego. Ray is having one of his better seasons in recent years, holding a 10-6 record with a 3.08 ERA and 107 strikeouts this year. The Padres are third in the NL West with a 58-54 record and are in the hunt for a Wild Card berth with two months remaining.
The Giants, who are having a rough season with a 47-65 record, get two young prospects as they turn their focus toward next season with unlikely odds of making the postseason. In 34.2 innings pitched at Double-A in 2026, Mendez posted a 4.93 ERA with 38 strikeouts. Hernandez, on the other hand, is 17 years old and is slashing .303/.424/.503 in the Dominican Summer League.
