The Cincinnati Reds have completed a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to acquire third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. In return, the Reds will send over shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura and reliever Taylor Rogers.
Hayes, 28, has played six MLB seasons, all coming with the Pirates. In his career, he has batted .254, with 39 home runs and 212 RBIs. He has a Gold Glove from the 2023 season. This year, he is batting .236 with two home runs and 36 RBIs.
The Reds have a 56-52 record this season, which has them three games back from a Wild Card spot. Third base has been an issue for Cincinnati as of late and they have even moved Noelvi Marte to the outfield. Hayes will provide good defense at third and has what will be the fourth-highest WAR for a position player on the Reds at 1.2.
Pittsburgh is getting Stafura, the ninth-ranked prospect in the Reds’ system who is in A-ball right now. He is batting .262 with four home runs this season. Rogers also goes to the Pirates after posting a 2.45 ERA, but he had struggled with inherited runners this season.
The Pirates get a prospect for the future as they sit at 46-62, well out of reach of the playoffs.
