The Reds have acquired Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood, Kyle Farmer and $7 million in cash from the Dodgers. The Dodgers will receive Homer Bailey and number seven and 20 prospects in the Reds’ organization Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray The deal was first reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
The trade fills a need for the Reds solidifying their outfield and rids the team of Homer Bailey, something the team has been trying to do after not living up to his contract. Bailey and Kemp will about cancel each other out when it comes to their salaries. With Puig, Kemp, Jesse Winker and Scott Schebler, the Reds now have a deep outfield to play around with.
The Reds lose a promising prospect in second baseman Jeter Downs, but the middle infield is a position they can afford to lose. With Jose Peraza, Scooter Gennett, Nick Senzel, Shed Long and Jonathan India, the Reds have more than enough middle infielders to afford giving one up.
The Dodgers were willing to part ways with two All-Star outfielders because of their depth in the outfield and the money they would be unloading. They are also releasing Bailey following the trade. Rumors are now circulating that the move was in an effort to be able to afford coveted free agent Bryce Harper.
Regardless of what the Dodgers plan on doing on their end, Nick Krall greatly improved the roster by adding three All-Stars to the team that will help them immediately compete. The outfield is now complete and they have now added Wood and Tanner Roark to the rotation through trades and still have money to make more moves. The Reds said they were going to make moves this offseason, expect more to come.
