The Red Sox lost their most recent series to the Athletics, 2-1. The Sox had a strong start in the first game but then performed poorly for the final two.
The Red Sox seemed like they were going for a series sweep with the performance they put up in game one. Pitching a reliever game, Nick Pivetta came in the third inning, and went six scoreless innings, picking up 13 strikeouts. That is the most in a relief appearance in Red Sox history.
The Sox offense was great as well, as it was stringing hits together to produce runs, no home runs needed. The whole lineup all had one hit each, and Connor Wong had three hits and three RBI.
This game was the start of the Sox’s downfall for the series. The Sox pitched another reliever game, but this time it did not work out. Joe Jacques pitched the first inning and barely into the second before he gave up three runs in the second, and the Sox were never able to come back from it.
Bats that were blazing hot in the series with the Cubs were now cold, as Rafael Devers was out with muscle soreness, and most of the team went through a cold spell. Masataka Yoshida was the only player with two hits in this game as well.
In the rubber match game of the series, the Red Sox were doomed from the beginning. With young arm Brayan Bello on the mound, it was looking like a win for the Sox. However, as soon as the game started, those expectations were turned around. Bello gave up six runs through three two run homers, and had to be pulled out. However, through the work of Robert Refsnyder, Justin Turner, and a couple other Sox, they managed to score five runs. This was not enough, though as the Red Sox still fell 6-5 and lost the series.
While the Red Sox lost this series to the A’s, they can be relieved they can now go home, and face the New York Mets at Fenway on July 21.
