Rachel Balkovec named first female manager in MiLB history

The New York Yankees have made history by hiring the first female manager in MiLB history. Rachel Balkovic will take over managing duties for the Yankees’ Low-A league affiliate Tampa Tarpons.

The MLB on Fox’s twitter account helped announce the news via Twitter on Sunday.

Low-A teams are on the bottom of the minor league affiliates, only above the Rookie league, which is viewed a bit differently. From Low-A, the hierarchy goes to High-A, Double-A and then Triple-A before reaching the major leagues.

Regardless of the league’s stance on the totem pole, the hiring is groundbreaking. Balkovec has held positions with minor league teams for the Cardinals, Astros and the Yankees before landing the manager job. She was the first female in the history of the league to own the position as Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator. She learned Spanish for that position.
