The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a trade with the New York Mets to acquire reliever Luke Weaver, according to Jorge Castillo. Pittsburgh will send shortstop Sammy Stafura to the Mets in the deal.
Weaver, 32, is an 11-year veteran who has played for the Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Royals, Reds, Mariners, Yankees and Mets. In his career, he has a 4.58 ERA and has experience in both starting and relieving roles. He has been better since making the move to reliever and has a 1.84 ERA with the Mets this season in 42 appearances.
Pittsburgh is 56-57 and still very much in the NL Wild Card race. The acquisition of Weaver will help a bullpen that has an ERA of 4.34, ranking 22nd in the league.
Stafura, 21, has played at the A and A+ levels this season. Across both levels, he has batted .276 with 20 home runs and 54 RBIs. With the Mets being one of the most disappointing teams of the season with a 47-66 record, they are selling before the deadline.
