The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be sellers at the trade deadline as they make a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the 6:00pm ET cutoff. Toronto has traded for 29-year-old shortstop Paul DeJong for a package that has yet to be announced.
USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
DeJong made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in May of 2017, to much fanfare. Up to this point in his career, he’s only ever played in St. Louis. He made his first and only All-Star appearance in 2019, but has not recorded any other MLB honors.
His career batting average is .233, with 115 home runs and 338 runs batted in through his seven-year career. In 2023, DeJong has played in 81 games, racking up 279 official at-bats and put up a .233 batting average, the same as his career BA.
