The San Diego Padres were swept in a short two-game series against the Seattle Mariners.
Both the offense and the pitching struggled in both games. The Padres’ offense was only able to score two runs in each game, and the pitchers gave up at least six runs in each game.
The first game of the series was played on Independence Day. Unfortunately, the Padres were not able to produce many fireworks in this game. Starting pitcher Sean Manaea struggled in this outing and only pitched in three ⅓ innings. In those innings, he gave up four runs on eight hits. He struggled with control as well, giving up four walks to Seattle batters.
The Padres’ defense struggled as well in this game. Two errors in this game are by the Padres’ defense. This leads to the Mariners scoring two unearned runs. These two errors and unearned runs ended up putting the game well out of reach, as the score in the game was 8-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Padres offense was unable to get much going in this game.
They did not score any runs until the bottom of the ninth inning. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim got his second hit of the game in an attempt to get a rally going. Center fielder Trent Grisham was up-to-bat after Kim, and Grisham proceeded to hit a two-run home run. This is Grisham’s eighth home run of the season. He now has 32 RBIs this season as well. Unfortunately, the Padres could not get much of a rally going in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Padres ended up losing this game with a score of 8-2.
The next game of the series was not much better of a result than the previous game. Starting pitcher Mike Clevinger was not bad in this outing, but he did not do enough to keep the Padres in the game. He pitched in six innings and gave up four runs on six hits and two walks. Relief pitcher Taylor Rogers did not do much to help keep the Padres in the game either. He pitched in one inning and gave up two runs on four hits.
The Padres lineup was unable to get much going in this one.
They scored the same number of runs as they did in the previous game. One of the runs was scored from a sacrifice fly by shortstop C.J. Abrams in the bottom of the sixth inning. Another run was scored by second baseman Jake Cronenworth because of an error committed by Mariners’ second baseman Adam Frazier. Right fielder Nomar Mazara hit well in this game. In this game, he has three hits and scored a run. This is the run scored by Abrams’ sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, the Padres lose this game 6-2.
After this series, the Padres are now 47-36. They are still in second place in the National League West division behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres are currently behind by six games. They have lost in eight of their last 10 games played.
Because of the Padres’ recent struggles, the team is now the second NL Wild Card team. They have been sitting in the top spot for most of the season, but the Atlanta Braves’ recent hot streak has put them in the top spot.
