The San Diego Padres are acquiring right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-handed pitchers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Padres were able to pull off this deal just minutes before the deadline and have now added another great starting pitcher to their roster in Casey Mize. Mize has a 4-6 record on the season with a 2.70 ERA and 85 strikeouts.
The Padres are right in the hunt for a Wild Card berth and also traded for starting pitcher Robbie Ray earlier today, strengthening their rotation as they enter the final few months of the regular season. Mize will be joined by Gage Workman, a Tigers third baseman who has only appeared in 16 games this season, slashing .158/.158/.553.
The Tigers will gain two left-handed pitching prospects in Mayfield and Wolf. At High-A, Mayfield has a 3.54 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 15 starts. Wolf, on the other hand, is pitching at Triple-A and has a 5-10 record with a 7.05 ERA in 17 starts this season.
Detroit has been one of the bigger sellers during the trade deadline period after dealing ace pitcher Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers a few days ago.
