The San Diego Padres have hired a new manager after firing Bob Melvin after the conclusion of the 2023 season. Mike Shildt, the former manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, has been named the manager of the Friars.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
Shildt has an overall managerial record of 252-199 after four years with the Cardinals. He was named National League Manager of the Year in 2019 after going 91-71 and finishing as runners-up in the NL, losing to the eventual World Series Champion Washington Nationals in the playoffs.
The Padres went 82-80, finishing third in the National League West despite having a very powerful offensive lineup. Shildt will reunite with Cardinals mainstays Matt Carpenter and Michael Wacha in San Diego.
