The San Diego Padres have completed a trade with the Kansas City Royals to acquire catcher Freddy Fermin, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert will be the return for Kansas City.
Fermin, 30, is a four-year veteran who has played his whole career with the Royals. He has batted .268 for his career and is at .255 for this season.
The Padres have a record of 60-49, which is good enough to place them in the last Wild Card spot in the National League. They improve their catchers with the move, as Elias Diaz is batting .202, while Martin Maldonado is at .204.
Bergert has a 2.72 ERA in 11 appearances so far this season.
The Padres have acquired pitchers at the deadline, which has made them consider moving others. Kansas City is three games out of a playoff spot in the AL and get an arm that can help them out of the bullpen or as a starter.
