The San Diego Padres have made a trade with the Athletics for closer Mason Miller and starter JP Sears, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. In return, the Padres will be sending shortstop Leodalis De Vries and right-handed pitchers to the Athletics.
Miller, 26, has 20 saves and a 3.76 ERA this season as the Athletics’ closer. Sears is a four-year veteran who has a 4.95 ERA in 22 games started this season.
The Padres have the best bullpen ERA in the league at 2.98 and have now improved a strength, while also adding to their starting pitching depth in Sears. They currently have the last Wild Card spot in the National League with a 60-49 record.
With the Athletics having a 49-63 record, they are now adding more prospects for the future with the trade. De Vries, 18, was the no. 1 prospect in the Padres system. Braden Nett (prospect no. 3 in SD’s system), Henry Baez (prospect no. 13) and Eduarnial Nunez (prospect no. 17) were also a part of the massive haul for the Athletics.
