Oakland Athletics get First Positive Coronavirus Case

A member of the Oakland Athletics organization has tested positive for coronavirus and Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros has been postponed.

Major League Baseball released an official statement this morning, stating, “Following a positive test for Covid-19 in the Oakland Athletics organization, today’s scheduled game between the A’s and the host Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park has been postponed out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be conducted. Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as necessary.”

It is unclear whether the positive test came from a player on the team or a staff member. This comes on the heels of a doubleheader between the Astros and Athletics that was played yesterday; both games resulting in Astros’ wins.

This is the first positive coronavirus test for any American League team and any team from the West. It is uncertain at the moment when play will resume.
