MLB Trade Targets: Starting Pitchers

The MLB Trade Deadline is on Monday, and teams are scrambling to get deals done. Lots of big names will be available for trade as some teams have signaled that they are open for business. Take a look at our Buyers and Sellers article to see which teams are which.

Here are some notable starting pitchers who are likely on the trade block, and what some potential fits for them could be.

Tarik Skubal – LHP – Tigers

Best Fits: Rays, Brewers

Skubal is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. The 2x Cy Young will be a hot commodity and will surely be the barometer for whether the Tigers think they can get back into contention this season.

Brady Singer – RHP – Reds

Best Fits: Diamondbacks, White Sox

Singer is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. He hasn’t had the best season for the Reds but has been healthy and reliable.

Tomoyuki Sugano – RHP – Rockies

Best Fits: Pirates, Astros

Sugano is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. He has been reliable on the mound pitching in a tough Denver environment and has great offspeed offerings.

Kris Bubic – LHP – Royals

Best Fits: Cubs, Astros

Bubic is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. The veteran has battled injury this year but was great the last few seasons.

Jose Soriano – RHP – Angels

Best Fits: Brewers, Diamondbacks

Soriano is under team control through 2029. He was one of the league’s best pitchers for the first couple months of the season and has been solid, even after coming back down to earth since then.

Reid Detmers – LHP – Angels

Best Fits: Braves, White Sox

Detmers is under team control through 2028. He has been a little inconsistent but overall good this year. The expected and advanced stats are kinder to him than some of the standard numbers.

Joe Ryan – RHP – Twins

Best Fits: Braves, Cubs

Ryan has a mutual option for the 2027 season. He has been one of the best pitchers in the American League this season and has anchored the Twins’ starting rotation.

Freddy Peralta – RHP – Mets

Best Fits: Brewers, Cubs

Peralta is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. He has had a rough season after some great years in Milwaukee. He is seen as a low-risk trade as he has some veteran upside.

Clay Holmes – RHP – Mets

Best Fits: Diamondbacks, Cubs

Holmes has a player option for 2027. When he has pitched this season, he has been fantastic. He is currently working his way back from a leg injury.

Robbie Ray – LHP – Giants

Best Fits: Rangers, Guardians

Ray is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. He has had a good season in San Francisco and will be looked at by teams needing a reliable veteran rotation arm.

Kevin Gausman – RHP – Blue Jays

Best Fits: Phillies, Braves

Gausman is a pure rental and will be a free agent after this season. He has already planned for a trade and outlined teams that he would prefer not to go to. He has had a down year by his standards but will still be a solid veteran presence.
