Max Scherzer Out For Game 5; Joe Ross to Start in His Place

Publish Date: October 27, 2019

In very unfortunate news for Nationals fans, ace Max Scherzer has been scratched from starting Game 5. He will be replaced by Joe Ross.

Scherzer, was the winning pitcher in Game 1 when he held the Astros to two runs over five innings. Joe Ross last pitched in relief in Game 3 and found success. He threw two shutout innings, only giving up one hit. For the season, Ross went 4-4, with a 5.48 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 27 games. Ross battled back from missing over a year as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He started to look like himself in August as he went 3-0, with a 1.05 ERA in five starts.

Ross will be leaned on to go deep in the game in Scherzer’s stead. Washington has their backs against the wall, as the series is now tied 2-2 and about to head back to Houston. The Nationals had a 2-0 series lead before losing Games 3 and 4 at home.
