Goodbye, Ramiel Tapia. Hello Again, Christian Arroyo

Publish Date: June 6, 2023

Red Sox second baseman Christian Arroyo has come back from injury, and the Red Sox had to DFA outfielder Ramiel Tapia to make space for Arroyo.

Before his injury, Arroyo was hitting .257 on the season, and for his last 30 games he has been hitting almost .300. As for Tapia, he was hitting .264 on the season.

Why Tapia?

The Red Sox have an abundance of outfielders. Other than Tapia, they have Alex Verdugo, Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida, Rob Refsnyder and Kike Hernandez if needed. All of these players are hitting better than Tapia, or can play in the infield.

Another reason was because of the situation at second base. Earlier this season, the Sox called up Enmanuel Valdez to play second base. In his almost 60 games so far, he has hit .240 with four home runs, and batted in 11 runs. He more or less has the same stats as Tapia, but he plays in the infield, which provides depth for the Sox.

Before Valdez, the only true second baseman that the Sox had was Arroyo. Now with Valdez, they have two, and both of them hit from different sides of the plate. This means if there is a lefty starting pitcher, they could start Arroyo, and vice versa.

Arroyo will make his return against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 5, 2023. As for Tapia, he was an above average outfielder, so it is likely he will be picked up soon.
