The Chicago Cubs are trading for Angels right-handed reliever Ryan Zeferjahn in exchange for Moisés Ballesteros and right-handed pitcher Mason McGwire, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Cubs have been one of the biggest buyers at the trade deadline, trading for Clay Holmes, Tyrone Taylor, Braxton Garrett and now Zeferjahn.
Zeferjahn is having a breakout season, posting a 3.66 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched with 75 strikeouts and four saves. Zeferjahn has an elite fastball that tops out at over 100 mph, and he should be an important part of the Cubs’ bullpen alongside closer Daniel Palencia.
In return, the Angels are receiving catcher/designated hitter Moisés Ballesteros and the Cubs’ 18th-ranked prospect, Mason McGwire. In 59 games this year, Ballesteros is slashing .231/.303/.385 with six home runs and 23 RBIs.
At High-A this season, McGwire has a 4.91 ERA with 27 strikeouts. Last in the AL West, the Angels will be looking ahead to next year as their postseason hopes appear unlikely this season.
