Clay Holmes Traded to the Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are trading for right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets in exchange for infielder Jefferson Rojas, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Cubs are clearly making an aggressive push at the trade deadline, already acquiring Braxton Garrett and Ryan Zeferjahn earlier today. They are getting one of the top starting pitchers in Holmes, who was having a great season for the Mets before fracturing his right fibula off a comebacker in mid-May. In nine starts, Holmes has a 4-4 record with a 2.39 ERA and 45 strikeouts. Holmes recently pitched 5.1 innings in a rehab start with High-A Brooklyn.

The Cubs are also getting outfielder Tyrone Taylor in the deal. Taylor is hitting .241/.290/.503 this season with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs. The Cubs are in second place in the NL Central, 6.5 games behind the Brewers. Their impressive 63-49 record has them leading the Wild Card race at the moment, and they will hope their multiple moves at the deadline can solidify that status.

The Mets are receiving one of the Cubs’ top prospects in Jefferson Rojas, who is currently listed as the Cubs’ No. 2 prospect. Rojas, 21, is hitting .270/.339/.461 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs at Double-A. The Mets are last in the NL East, and although they lose a talented starting pitcher in Holmes, they are getting a top-100 prospect in Rojas in return.
