The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Cincinnati Reds.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
The Cincinnati Reds ended up tied for fourth in the NL Central, as they and the Pirates both ended the season with a record of 62-100. It turned out to be just their second 100-loss season in franchise history, the other coming in 1982.
1. Hunter Greene
2022 stats: 5-13, 4.44 ERA, 125.2 IP, 62 ER
Greene’s rookie year showed potential, as he managed to pitch a complete game shutout and put up starters’ innings.
2. Nick Lodolo
2022 stats: 4-7, 3.66 ERA, 103.1, 42 ER
Lodolo’s rookie season looked similar to Greene’s, minus some of the workload. He finished sixth in Rookie of the Year voting.
3. Graham Ashcraft
2022 stats: 5-6, 4.89 ERA, 105.0 IP, 57 ER
Ashcraft is yet another second-year player for the Reds. He pitched almost the exact same amount of innings as Lodolo, but was less productive.
4. Luke Weaver
2022 stats: 1-1, 6.56 ERA, 35.2 IP, 26 ER
Weaver’s 2022 numbers aren’t to be trusted, as he pitched just 35.2 innings on two different teams last year. He should return to a legitimate starter’s role in 2023.
5. Luis Cessa
2022 stats: 4-4, 4.57 ERA, 80.2 IP, 41 ER
Cincinnati acquired Cessa in 2021, pitching him in just 26.1 innings. Last season, they still didn’t give him starter’s work but he may be thrust into the lineup this year.
