The Blue Jays have completed a trade for right-hander Jose Berrios. Minnesota receives shortstop/center fielder Austin Martin and right-handed pitcher Simeon Woods-Richardson in return for the 27-year-old Berrios.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the finalized details of the trade via Twitter on Friday.
Berrios is a two-time All Star, making the cut in both 2018 and 2019. In 2021, he has pitched 121.1 innings, putting up an ERA of 3.48. A true strikeout pitcher, Berrios has 126 this year alone against 14 home runs allowed.
The Blue Jays were in search of another arm, but gave up two high-level prospects in return. Berrios’ contract runs through the end of 2022, meaning this trade amounts to little more than a rental as they try to overtake the Yankees and Red Sox for the AL East crown.
