The Houston Astros are trading for Blue Jays center fielder Daulton Varsho in exchange for right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Varsho, 30, is in his seventh MLB season and has played for both the Diamondbacks and the Blue Jays. Varsho is slashing .243/.307/.375 this season with seven home runs and 26 RBIs. Beyond his offense, Varsho is known for his athleticism and elite outfield defense, something the Astros will be happy to add.
The Astros currently lead a very tight AL West, and if Varsho can succeed in Houston, he could be just what the Astros need to secure the division and their spot in the playoffs.
In return, the Astros are sending right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti to the Blue Jays. After losing starting pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Cubs, Arrighetti will be an important piece in a new-look Blue Jays rotation. Arrighetti has a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA and 87 strikeouts this season.
