All 2023 Offseason MLB Manager Changes

Publish Date: November 22, 2023

Some MLB teams have already decided to go in new directions less than a month after the end of the 2023 season. This article will keep a running tally on what managerial moves have been made throughout the offseason, and will be updated accordingly. Stay tuned to TGH to see every move!

Craig Counsell – Chicago Cubs

Counsell had been the longtime manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. After becoming a “free agent” managerial candidate, he passed on the Brewers’ offer and chose to head up their rivals, the Chicago Cubs. His five-year, $40 million contract made him the highest paid manager in MLB history.

Stephen Vogt – Cleveland Guardians

Stephen Vogt, former World Series-winning catcher, started his coaching career last season with the Seattle Mariners as their Quality Control and Bullpen coach. He was stolen away by the Guardians, who parted ways with long-time manager Terry Francona.

Pat Murphy – Milwaukee Brewers

After the Brewers were snubbed by Counsell, they tapped Pat Murphy as their next skipper. Murphy was the interim manager for the Padres in 2015 after Bud Black was fired, but did not retain the job. Since then he has been a bench coach for Milwaukee.

Joe Espada – Houston Astros

Espada started his coaching career in 2010 with the Marlins, then bounced around to the Yankees and Astros before being given the Manager job there. He was elevated to the position after the retirement of Dusty Baker.

Bob Melvin – San Francisco Giants

Bob Melvin went from the San Diego Padres north to the San Francisco Giants in the 2023-2024 offseason. This will be the fifth different team for which he’s been the manager after stints in Seattle, Arizona, Oakland and, of course, San Diego.

Ron Washington – Los Angeles Angels

Washington was the manager for the Texas Rangers team that was one strike away from becoming World Series champions in 2011. That was his second consecutive World Series disappointment. Since then, he’s won a Fall Classic with the Braves as a third base coach. He’ll now try to get Mike Trout to the postseason for the first time.

Carlos Mendoza – New York Mets

After the firing of a well-known manager in Buck Showalter, Carlos Mendoza was elevated to the position after being a coach for the team since 2018. The Mets had one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory, so it will be up to Mendoza to right the very expensive ship.

Mike Shildt – San Diego Padres

Bob Melvin led the offensive powerhouse San Diego Padres to just an 82-80 record, good enough for third in the NL West. After parting ways with him, they’ve hired Mike Shildt, who won NL Manager of the Year back in 2019 with St. Louis.
