Don’t worry Magic: Arena players, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate is coming to online play. The one catch – it’ll be a part of a new set called Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate. The newest set will feature cards from the Commander Legends as well as some cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This new set will be the first unique Alchemy set to be released. The Alchemy Horizons release date is set for July 7.

The unique aspect of Alchemy Horizons is that it is the first Alchemy set to not be tied to a Standard set. Typically new Alchemy sets are paired with Standard sets, as its purpose was to serve as a second option to Standard. Alchemy is also a set that provides an outlet for game developers to nerf or buff cards, something that paper Magic can’t do.

The Alchemy Horizons release date allows the set to serve as a placeholder until the next Standard release. Outside of Arena, players have access to other supplemental sets like Commander Legends and Double Masters 2022. It makes sense to create a new product that keeps Magic Arena players engaged while tabletop players have new content.
Enfranchised players will look at this new set with a sense of doubt however, as previous iterations of Alchemy sets have been a mixed bag. Some sets have been wildly powerful out of the gate, while others are simply a waste of wildcards. Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate will look to buck the trend and finally be a tempered set for Arena users.
