On Tuesday March 14, Wizards of the Coast kicked off their reveal event for the upcoming Universes Beyond set, Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. The set is focused around J.R.R Tolkien’s classic series, Lord of the Rings. In the set, players can expect cards depicting all of their favorite characters. Of course, there is one “character” that controls the fate of everyone in the books and movies – The One Ring. Magic players will get their own chance to wield the immense power of The One Ring when it appears in booster boxes later this year.
However players will need to be careful when opening up those boxes when the set finally arrives. Inside one pack, and exactly one pack, is a uniquely rare card that thematically fits a card like The One Ring. Wizards of the Coast revealed that there will be an alternate art version of The One Ring, that is serialized as 001/001. That’s right, the Sauron-text version of The One Ring is a one of one copy.
The Magic: The Gathering scene is in shock. A card like this could be wildly expensive, as it is the single copy to exist. While this is the exclusive, singular copy of this version, there are several other versions that players can find inside various products.

No one knows for sure how much this card will sell for when it is eventually opened. Frankly, there is a world where no one reveals they have opened such an exclusive and sought after collectible. Perhaps one day someone will waltz up to a tournament and casually reveal their prized possession is inside their deck. Or maybe it will sit quietly in a frame in a basement somewhere, only to be admired.
Players can start pre-ordering their cards now get a chance to open the most elusive card to date. Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth is set for a June 23 tabletop release date.
