Madden 19: Most underrated AFC players

Over the last few weeks, our staff has compiled a lot of posts covering questionable Madden 19 ratings. Every team has been covered, but who were the players that Madden was the most incorrect on? This post will cover the most underrated AFC players with excerpts from our articles covering specific teams.

Andy Dalton, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

Dalton is a player who people think is vastly underrated or just not very good. This writer is here to tell you that Andy Dalton is underrated and people need to appreciate him more. A 77 rating on this years Madden is a spit in the face of everything Dalton has done.

With absolutely no offensive line last year, Dalton was considered one of the best QB’s when under pressure, even though he was sacked 39 times. Most of them were seemingly immediately after the ball was snapped and there was no way for him to escape. Giving the man 81 awareness is a joke. Also, they are giving him bad accuracy yet, in every year other than last year when he was running for his life constantly, he has always been pretty accurate and even has a 62.3% completion in his career. He also had one of his lowest interception seasons at 12 while still throwing for 25 touchdowns. Again this was all with a terrible offensive line.

Andy Dalton is not a top 10 quarterback and that is completely fair. But having him as the 33rd best one in the league behind rookies like Rosen. Jackson and Mayfield is an absolute insult. Andy Dalton is at least an 83 or 84, putting him right next tor Jared Goff, Derek Carr and Alex Smith.- Robert Hanes

C.J. Mosley, LB, Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have received more returns on their investment in number 57 than even they expected. But the latest Madden rating for Mosley does not do the three-time Pro-Bowler justice. Madden 19 rates Mosley an overall of 84. To say this is too low of a rating is an understatement. What he accomplished last season deserves better recognition than it has.

During all 16 games of the 2017 season, CJ Mosley tallied 132 combined tackles: 96 solo and 36 assisted. He has also caught two interceptions, forced and recovered three fumbles and defended seven passes. Over in the Madden Ratings, his awareness stands at 84, while his play recognition and pursuit ratings sit in the low-to-mid 80 eighties. These ratings should be significantly higher. His awareness should be closer to the low 90’s, while his play recognition and pursuit should both be between 86-89.- Manny Finale

JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

Antonio Brown checks in with a 99, then after him is a steep drop off to Smith-Schuster at 80. This seems really low for a receiver who had 58 receptions for 917 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season. Pierre Garcon is rated 86 and he only had 500 receiving yards and not one touchdown last season.

Even stranger still JuJu’s speed rating is only 89, which is two points slower than Artie Burns and three points slower than AB. That just seems a little low for someone who outran a whole Lions defense for a 97-yard touchdown. Especially since Lions’ corner Darius Slay “allegedly” has 94 speed, which is five more than JuJu Smith-Schuster. -Jacob Gilbert

Joe Schobert, LB, Cleveland Browns

Schobert was an unused commodity as a rookie in 2016, although after featuring in 100 percent of the Browns defensive snaps last season, the second-year man out of Wisconsin was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time. The 24-year-old led Cleveland in total tackles with 144, forced fumbles with 3 and total snaps played at 1208.

Schobert will be given a 76 overall rating in Madden 19, which is a travesty. His 1208 total snaps in 2017 made him the second most readily available linebacker in the NFL, behind only former New York Jet, and current New Orleans Saint, Demario Davis, who will be given an 85 overall rating in Madden 19. Schobert’s 144 total tackles were tied for most in the NFL, placing him ahead of Bobby Wagner and Deion Jones, who will be rated 97 and 90 respectively.

Schobert’s defensive contributions seem to be overlooked by EA Sports due to the Cleveland Browns defensive struggles as a team in 2017. They ranked dead last in takeaways and turnover differential while being ranked fourth to last in points allowed per game.

Schobert showed that he is one of the most talented players on the roster, although this is something Madden has failed to realize. His 76 overall ties him for 13th highest among just Cleveland defensive players and places him out of the top-60 in terms of total NFL linebackers. How can you essentially lead the NFL in snaps and tackles and still be overlooked to this degree?- Avery Seltzer

Darron Lee, LB, New York Jets

Lee may be one of the most disrespected players in terms of Madden rating in 2019. His 73-overall rating makes him the 15th highest rated defensive player on the Jets and 40th among all middle linebackers.

The 23-year old amassed 67 tackles and 3 sacks in 2017, which ranked second and fourth respectively among Jets players. New York’s leading tackler from 2017 was Demario Davis, who after moving to the New Orleans Saints in the offseason, was given an 85-overall rating. According to pro-football-reference.com, the approximate value of a player is used to “put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year”. Lee’s approximate value in 2017 was 8, whereas Davis was just ahead of him at 9, although EA Sports has decided to create a 12-overall point difference between the two.

When we look at Lee’s rating compared to his current and former teammates, it is clear the former first-round pick is being majorly overlooked by EA Sports. -Avery Seltzer
