The Impressive Champion with Unbelievable Win Rates

Publish Date: April 18, 2024

Throughout the years, most champions’ power waxes and wanes. Sometimes dominant and other times lacking, they cycle through different levels of strength and varying win rates. However, one Support champion seems to be immune, and continues to excel through every meta and new patch. And no, it’s not Janna (surprisingly).

Sona’s Undefeated Streak

Sona has possibly the best track record of any single Support, especially regarding recent seasons. In fact, her Support win rate has not dropped below 50% since March 1st, 2020. That is over four years of Summoner’s Rift dominance. The closest Support champion behind her is Soraka, who has steadily remained above 50% since early 2021. However, this means that Sona is still a full year ahead of Soraka when it comes to maintaining steady, impressive win rates.

Recent Power

Although she has a great average win rate over time, Sona’s victories don’t stop there. Currently, she has a 53.5% Support win rate and 53.4% overall, placing her as the 2nd best win rate champion out of all 168. Not only is she strong over time, but she is also currently in the middle of a win rate spike.

Part of this is thanks to her recent changes. Sona received a buff with Patch 14.7 two weeks ago. As her power chord damage, heal, and ally movement speed were increased, so too was her ability to lead her team to victory. And while she got a nerf to her Q aura alongside the other changes, that didn’t slow her down. Sona’s overall win rate has quickly increased since the patch, improving by +2.2%. So far, this is the greatest single change of any champion’s win rate following the 14.7 Patch.

Ban Rates

Despite her continuously improving stats, the Maven of the Strings seems to slip under enemies’ radar. She only has a 0.3% ban rate, far lower than one would expect given her consistent strong performance.

Janna, another enchantress with a slightly lower overall win rate than Sona (53.4% vs 52.5%), is banned 5.4% of the time. This means that Janna is banned 18x more frequently than Sona, despite statistically performing slightly worse. Power level is not the only reason to ban champions, of course. However, it is still surprising how little people seem to care about facing Sona even though she is quite powerful right now.

Sona’s Future

Sona may have remained impressive for years, but when will it be time to tone her down? Previous Support changes may hold the answer.

This year, Maokai received an adjustment and a nerf back-to-back, finally putting an end to his early-season reign. His Support win rate made it all the way up to ~55% before any changes occurred.

Bard is another Support that was recently nerfed, as his Passive and Q damage were reduced in 14.4. At that point, his Support win rate was around 53%, and his ban rate had risen above 2% from his normal sub-1%.

Sona may or may not receive nerfs in the near future. So far, players don’t seem to be too annoyed while facing her, or at least not enough to use a ban against her. And while her overall win rates are certainly high, they are also close to a few other enchanters, such as Taric and Janna. Additionally, from the information available about 14.8, it seems that Sona is not on the list for any upcoming changes (so far). If she is to be nerfed, it most likely would not be until May 1st at the absolute earliest.

Final Thoughts

For Support fans, or anyone who is looking to try out a new strong champion: play Sona. Her years-long win rate streak is not at its end yet, but it might be on the way if she continues on her current trajectory. Regardless of when her continued victories come to an end, Sona is certainly an impressive champion, and one that brings great potential to her team.
