2023 Spring Review
The story of Spring Split was teams who did not live up to expectations. Team Liquid was no exception to this. They came in with a big plan to be a fully Korean-speaking roster. CoreJJ was the only player who carried over and they brought up Haeri and Yeon from their top-tier Academy team. Then they added a lot of firepower by bringing in the most recent World Champion jungler in Pyosik with former LCS MVP Summit. There was no way this team was not going to perform, right?
Wrong. They struggled to perform throughout the split and ended with an 8-10 record which was only good for eighth. The team certainly had all of the talent but they struggled to bring it all together and play as a cohesive unit.
2023 Summer Split Roster
Top- Summit
Jng- Pyosik
Mid- Haeri
Bot- Yeon
Sup- CoreJJ
That is correct, the entire roster is staying. Summit will have to figure out how to not overpush if he is ever going to be the player that LCS fans loved while on C9. Pyosik also had a similar problem but in the jungle where it felt like he was taking too many risks. CoreJJ will need to be the leader that can bring them all together even if he is not as mechanically gifted as he was when initially came back to the LCS. Then there are the two young guys in Haeri and Yeon. It is hard not to give them a bit of a pass with the high expectations and them being rookies. That being said, they will have to improve for this team to have a shot of accomplishing anything significant.
Predicted Spring Placement: 5th
Potential Range for the Team: 1st – 8th
There is no doubt that Team Liquid has all the talent. Their top laner is possibly the best actual laner in the LCS but if anyone interferes then it is all over. Hopefully, their bot lane will only get better as well. The one thing that will not be questioned is the effort.
They were one of the only teams to go over to Europe to practice against MSI teams. This not only shows their resolve but it should also be noted that this means that they did not get much of a break during the break.
Team Liquid could win the whole thing if they come together and live up to their potential. The problem is that there were so many question marks surrounding every player after their Spring performance that it feels like it would be hard to clear most of them up in just a few months. Regardless, they should be fighting for a spot at Worlds and if not then Steve may just blow the whole thing up and try again.
