League of Legends has the same name system ever since launch. Players create a summoner name, which is unique to them within their specified region. These players are capable of buying a name change for blue essence of Riot Points. But on October 2023, Riot announced the removal of summoner names.
Instead, they’re shifting exclusively to Riot IDs. This means summoner names won’t be a thing, and the Riot ID will likely be the name of the user across all of the Riot Games IPs. The change was announced to occur on November 20.
The community is in a uproar, with a vast majority completely against this change. In the comments of the Twitter post, multiple users ratioed the original post while complaining about the change.
“What in the blizzard are you doing?” one user asked.
“Do you guys have cancer?” the top liked comment questioned.
One solid criticsm regarding the change is that players who have already unlocked all the champions woin’t have anywhere to use their blue essence.
“Blue essence will be completely useless for people that have unlocked every champion, except for essence emporiums(by the time a new champion comes out, those players would have plenty of BE to buy the champion like 9 times),” a Redditor stated.
For those unaware, players will get a free name change every 365 days. In other words, once a year. But to change their Riot ID after that, they have to pay a fee of $10 USD.
Many are upset with the idea of microtransactions. Though RP has been a method of purchasing a name change for years, players still had the option of paying with blue essence. In addition, people seem to have enjoyed having a unique identity for their Summoner names on League of Legends.
Considering the assertive statement of the Twitter post, alongside their mini developers’ blog, it doesn’t seem like Riot will take back their decision. In other words, expect their new policy to launch on November 20.
