In a surprise move, Cloud9 loses a coach just before the start of the 2023 season. On Thursday December 29, Cloud9 announced that Max Waldo is leaving Cloud9 to pursue a career in content creation. Max Waldo served as the Head Coach for Cloud9 in 2022, and was recently re-signed as a positional coach for the top lane.
In 2022 Max Waldo lead the Cloud9 roster after Nick “LS” De Cesare left the team early in the Spring Split. Under Max the team advanced to the Spring Split playoffs, but failed to advance through the bracket.
For the Summer Split Cloud9 made several roster moves that allowed them to reach the playoffs once again, this time taking the trophy. Sadly Cloud9 struggled at Worlds and saw an early exit after winning a single game.

Cloud9 made the decision to go back to previous Head Coach Alfonso “Mithy” Rodriguez to start the 2023 offseason. Mithy served as the Head Coach for Cloud9 in 2021, after being promoted to the position after the Mid Season Invitational. Max Waldo took a step down from the Head Coach role to take up a role as a Positional Coach. However after the announcement Thursday, Max Waldo looks like the new position didn’t quite cut it.
Cloud9 heads into the new season with a new mid laner, in hopes to return to form and remain one of the top teams in the league. Fans will have to tune in when the LCS kicks off in January to see if their new C9 team is a contender.
