Plans for League of Legends Preseason 2025

Although not much has been confirmed or released, in a YouTube video by Riot Games, it is stated that with preseason 2025, there will be “three distinct thematic seasons, each bringing its own narrative, progression, and content updates.”  Riot Games’ goal for 2025 is to make each season feel unique and individual, each with its focus and themes complemented by content updates and events.  Each of the three seasons in 2025 will include a new champion that relates to the theme of that season.

Changes to Matchmaking, LP Gains, and MMR

Riot Games has confirmed changes to ranked queues, involving changes to LP gains, matchmaking, and MMR, with the goal being to make the ranked experience more rewarding to all players.

A Reddit comment by Riot Iksar mentions the addition of TrueSkill 2 for ranked League of Legends queues. The goal of TrueSkill 2 is to fix the problem with smurfing, or, higher-ranked players playing on lower-ranked accounts. This system will help place newer accounts into a rank where they belong, eliminating the issue of elite players completely dominating games in lower elos. Alongside these changes will come better LP gains, attempting to fix the issues of LP gains decreasing as you climb to an elo higher than your MMR. These additions will make matchmaking more fair for new players, which hopefully will soften the infamous problems that come with being a new player in League of Legends.

Preseason 2025 Cosmetic Changes

Following the release of Season 2 of Arcane, Riot Games has decided to add new cosmetic tiers and options to League of Legends as well. This League of Legends Devpost goes in depth about the future of League of Legends cosmetics, including a new tier of Gacha skins, called Exalted Skins, and a new form of cosmetic called Nexus Finishers.

Exalted Skins are a new tier of skin being added to League of Legends, being defined as a “luxury good.”  Exalted skins will be available through a gacha system utilizing a new currency called Ancient Spark. Players will be able to purchase Ancient Sparks for 400 RP each, and they will be used to gamble from a pool of rewards including things such as the new exalted skins, exclusive paragon chromas and banners, and Mythic Essence.  The first Exalted Skin being released will come with the release of Season 2 of Arcane, with the skin being Arcane Fractured Jinx.

Exalted Skins are meant to be the highest quality skins available in the game, which is reflected by their ~32000 RP Priceline. Arcane Fractured Jinx will include two different models, each with their unique voiceover and animations, and an ability to switch between the two during the game.

Nexus Finishers will be available for purchase with Mythic Essence and are a new way to add a personal flare to your League of Legends games. At the end of every game of League of Legends, when one nexus is destroyed, a randomly selected player of the winning team will have their Nexus Finisher selected. This will showcase a new unique themed animation instead of the classic nexus explosion, and these will be available for 250 Mythic Essence each.

Theories for Preseason 2025

Although not much has been talked about yet in the case of gameplay and content updates, it is safe to say that some assumptions can be made, at least about the first of the three 2025 seasons of League of Legends.

The first of the three 2025 seasons will most likely focus on Arcane, with the addition of Ambess Medarda, and potentially Mel Medarda as well.  This can be deduced from the focus on Arcane champions and cosmetics. Gameplay-wise, there will most likely be changes involving items and objectives, following a similar pattern of previous preseason changes.  Items will most likely be added, removed, and reworked to keep the gameplay pattern of League of Legends fresh and exciting.

Some other changes we could potentially see could be a new map skin for Summoner’s Rift to complement the new ARAM map change, or maybe even new objectives related to Arcane.
