2023 Spring Review

Coming into the 2023 Season, EG fans were very excited. While losing Danny to retirement and Impact to FlyQuest were tough, the signings of Ssumday and FBI felt like home runs initially. The team kept its core of Inspired, Jojopyun and Vulcan intact while adding two great all-time LCS players. Instead, things went very wrong.

The team would struggle to a 10-8 record, which wouldn’t seem that bad but considering the expectations, this team certainly had a bad Split. Once they reached Playoffs, after losing the tiebreaker games to get a guaranteed double-elimination spot, EG would win their first series. Only to be knocked out in one of the most surprising series in LCS history, 0-3 to Golden Guardians. This would lead to more than a few changes to the team for this Summer.

2023 Summer Split Roster

Top- Revenge

Jng- Armao

Mid- jojopyun

Bot- Unforgiven

Sup- Eyla

Looking at this team it feels like the island of misfit toys and jojopyun. But then if one were to look again they might see the slightest glimmer of hope. While it is clear that EG are in cost-saving mode, they are getting players who should be hungry. For starters, Revenge is one of the best top laners that seemingly struggles to do what every other top laner thinks he should be doing. If he can find whatever makes everyone talk so highly about him, he could be one of the best in the LCS. Then there is the return of Armao who likely will be getting his last shot but who has helped multiple tier-two teams win championships. While jojopyun struggled last Split, he is still one of the best players in the LCS. The bot lane of Unforgiven and Eyla is certainly an interesting one. Both have been top prospects at one point and could combine to be a dark horse for top bot lanes in the LCS.

Predicted Spring Placement: 7th

Potential Range for the Team: 3rd – 9th

While this team will never be the worst in the LCS, where they could finish is as up in the air as any team in the LCS. They certainly are not better than their Spring Split team, at least in terms of talent. But they could come together as a team and surprise a lot of people. There are players with big brains and raw talent but trying to put all of that together will take a genius.

That is why they are currently picked to finish seventh and only just barely. There is a dark horse in this squad but they will have to do a lot to realize it. The question marks are numerous but the potential for this team to be at least fun is very high. Look for EG to be one of the most cost-effective teams in the LCS.
